NOTE: This applies to both open source and commercial editions of Chocolatey.

1. Ensure you are set for organizational deployment

Please see the organizational deployment guide

  • Open Source or Commercial:
    • Proxy Repository - Create a proxy nuget repository on Nexus, Artifactory Pro, or a proxy Chocolatey repository on ProGet. Point your upstream to Packages cache on first access automatically. Make sure your choco clients are using your proxy repository as a source and NOT the default community repository. See source command for more information.
    • You can also just download the package and push it to a repository Download

3. Enter your internal repository url

(this should look similar to

4. Choose your deployment method:

choco upgrade pov-ray -y --source="'STEP 3 URL'" [other options]

See options you can pass to upgrade.

See best practices for scripting.

Add this to a PowerShell script or use a Batch script with tools and in places where you are calling directly to Chocolatey. If you are integrating, keep in mind enhanced exit codes.

If you do use a PowerShell script, use the following to ensure bad exit codes are shown as failures:

choco upgrade pov-ray -y --source="'STEP 3 URL'"

Write-Verbose "Exit code was $exitCode"
$validExitCodes = @(0, 1605, 1614, 1641, 3010)
if ($validExitCodes -contains $exitCode) {
  Exit 0

Exit $exitCode

The Persistence of Vision Ray-Tracer creates three-dimensional, photo-realistic images using a rendering technique called ray-tracing. It reads in a text file containing information describing the objects and lighting in a scene and generates an image of that scene from the view point of a camera also described in the text file. Ray-tracing is not a fast process by any means, but it produces very high quality images with realistic reflections, shading, perspective and other effects.

This installs both the AGPL3-licensed application and the editor DLLs which implement the optional codemax code editor not covered by the AGPL3. The DLLs are provided pursuant to the license that applied to the previous version of POV-Ray (v3.62) and may only be used under those terms.

POV-ray installs the application for all users (in \Program Files), but installs libraries, samples and necessary settings files into ONLY the current user's \Documents\ directory. By default, other users will get indeciferable error messages when first starting POV-ray. This Chocolatey package mitigates that problem somewhat by copying the files to the default user profile. It does not resolve the issue with respect to existing user profiles, but it will also copy the default files to the POV-ray install directory so they can be easily found. See here and here for details.

# POV-ray installs for the current user, but completely ignores future, other users.
# This will copy all the files that the installing user gets (including some
# necessary ones) to the Default user profile. This measurably slows down initial
# logins, but there is no mechanism to always have these files created for users upon
# their first run of POV-ray (usually called from another app) nor is there any means
# to include these files for already-existing user profiles.

In cases where actual malware is found, the packages are subject to removal. Software sometimes has false positives. Moderators do not necessarily validate the safety of the underlying software, only that a package retrieves software from the official distribution point and/or validate embedded software against official distribution point (where distribution rights allow redistribution).

Chocolatey Pro provides runtime protection from possible malware.
